COOHCAT CREW/1993 Paying homage to the history of african americans in Rowing & 90's Golden Era Hip Hop!
In 1961 Howard University founded the nation's first all Black Collegiate Men's Crew Team, and in 1964 the Howard Crew team won the Washington Regatta, competing against the likes of american university, georgetown university & george washington university. And let's forget in the 1990's on the westside of chicago, young african american men formed the first all-black high school rowing team, in the united states.
But the history of Crew goes back even earlier to the late 1870's, when frenchy johnson became the first prominent african american Oarsman of modern times. He was considered to be fastest oarsman in boston. He also in 1875, with a few friends formed the first-ever african american rowing club, called "Cornucopia Boat Club."
COOHCAT CREW 1993 pays ode to the Golden Era of hip hop, 1993! Which that year you saw great albums put out by the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, Souls Of Mischief, Digable Planets etc....
